Can You Service Your Car Outside the Dealership Without Losing Your Warranty in South Africa?

Vehicle owner reviewing car service and warranty documentation with a professional advisor in South Africa.

Yes. In South Africa, you can service your car at an independent workshop without automatically losing your manufacturer's warranty. However, certain warranty protections may be affected, and your OEM service plan may not cover the cost.

According to Right to Repair South Africa, motorists can choose between an authorised dealership and an independent service provider. This choice is supported by the Competition Commission's automotive aftermarket guidelines, issued under Section 79 of the Competition Act. These guidelines provide regulatory guidance; they are not a separate Act of Parliament or a guarantee of the outcome of every warranty dispute.

What Happens If You Have an OEM Warranty and Service Plan?

An OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) warranty generally covers qualifying manufacturing defects or mechanical failures, subject to the manufacturer's warranty conditions.

An OEM service plan covers specified scheduled servicing costs, generally through the manufacturer's approved service network.

If you choose an independent workshop outside that network, three important points apply:

Servicing costs: The OEM is not obliged to pay for the independent service. You will generally be responsible for the cost yourself.

Manufacturer's warranty: Your warranty is not automatically cancelled, but certain protections may be affected if independent servicing causes damage.

Remaining service plan benefits: Whether your unused OEM service-plan benefits continue depends on your agreement. Obtain confirmation from your manufacturer or plan administrator before booking.

Our recommendation: If your vehicle has an active OEM service plan, use the manufacturer's approved network to benefit from your prepaid servicing, unless your provider confirms an alternative arrangement.

What If You Have a Manufacturer's Warranty but No Service Plan?

You can choose an independent workshop, including an RMS Bosch Car Service workshop, without automatically invalidating your manufacturer's warranty. However, the vehicle must be serviced according to the manufacturer's applicable requirements, and accurate service records must be maintained. You will generally pay for the routine servicing yourself.

What If You Have an Aftermarket Service Plan or Extended Warranty?

An aftermarket service plan is generally offered by a third-party provider and covers specified scheduled servicing costs. You may be able to use an independent workshop, depending on the provider's approved workshop network, coverage conditions and authorisation requirements.

An aftermarket motor warranty, sometimes called an extended warranty, is different. It covers specified failures according to the warranty agreement and may have its own servicing requirements. Having an aftermarket service plan does not automatically mean you have an extended motor warranty.

Can Independent Servicing Affect Your Manufacturer's Warranty?

Yes, certain warranty protections can be affected if independent servicing causes damage to your vehicle.

Under Section 5.4 of the Competition Commission's guidelines:

Independent workshops must record in-warranty servicing in the vehicle's service book or equivalent record.

Independent workshops must clearly disclose risks of damage arising from their work, including damage that may affect certain OEM warranty obligations.

Independent workshops must disclose whether they have adequate commercial insurance cover for the work being performed.

If independent servicing causes damage, some warranty provisions may become invalid, while others may remain enforceable.

Importantly, choosing an independent workshop alone does not automatically void your entire manufacturer's warranty.

Will servicing my car at RMS Bosch automatically void my manufacturer's warranty?

No. Independent servicing does not automatically cancel your manufacturer's warranty. However, incorrect servicing that causes damage may affect certain warranty protections.

Will my OEM service plan pay for independent servicing?

Not necessarily. An OEM is not obliged to pay for servicing outside its approved network. Your plan's specific payment conditions must be checked.

Can I use an aftermarket service plan at RMS Bosch?

Potentially. This depends on your provider's approved workshop requirements and any necessary authorisation.
