Car Won’t Start? Battery, Starter or Alternator?
Published 4 October 2026
A car that will not start does not automatically need a new battery. Slow cranking, clicking, dim lights, a charging warning light or a complete no-crank condition can point to different parts of the starting and charging system.
Symptoms can have more than one cause. RMS Bosch focuses on testing and inspection before significant repair work is recommended.
Signs the battery may be weak
A weak battery often causes slow cranking, repeated clicking or lights that dim sharply when you try to start the engine.
- Slow engine cranking
- Clicking when the key or start button is used
- Electrical systems becoming weak during starting
- Battery is old or repeatedly needs a jump-start
Signs the starter may be the problem
If battery voltage is available but the engine does not crank properly, the starter motor, solenoid, wiring or connections may need testing.
Signs the alternator may be involved
If the vehicle starts after charging or jump-starting but the battery repeatedly goes flat, the charging system should be tested rather than replacing the battery by assumption.
How RMS diagnoses starting faults
RMS Bosch checks battery condition, charging output, starter operation and relevant electrical connections before recommending parts. The aim is to confirm the cause first.
