Engine Warning Light On? What It Could Mean
Published 4 October 2026
An engine warning light means the vehicle has detected a fault, but the light does not identify the failed component by itself. The cause may involve ignition, fuel delivery, emissions, sensors, temperature control or another engine-management system.
Symptoms can have more than one cause. RMS Bosch focuses on testing and inspection before significant repair work is recommended.
A fault code is a starting point
A diagnostic code points technicians toward a system or condition. It should not be treated as an automatic instruction to replace a specific part.
Common symptoms that can appear with the warning light
Some vehicles continue driving normally while others develop obvious symptoms.
- Loss of power
- Rough idle or misfire
- Higher fuel consumption
- Difficult starting
- Limp mode
Solid light versus flashing light
A solid warning light should be assessed promptly. A flashing engine light can indicate a more serious misfire or fault and may require the vehicle to be stopped safely to reduce the risk of further damage.
Diagnose before repair
RMS Bosch combines stored fault information, live data and targeted testing to confirm the likely cause before significant repair work is recommended.
