Why Does My Car Battery Keep Going Flat?
Published 4 October 2026
If a car battery repeatedly goes flat, replacing it without testing the rest of the system may not solve the problem. The vehicle may have a charging fault, an electrical drain or a connection issue.
Symptoms can have more than one cause. RMS Bosch focuses on testing and inspection before significant repair work is recommended.
Common reasons batteries go flat
The pattern of failure matters: overnight, after standing for days, or while driving can point technicians in different directions.
- Battery has reached the end of its useful life
- Alternator is not charging correctly
- Electrical component remains active after shutdown
- Loose or corroded connection
- Repeated short trips do not restore charge
Why a jump-start is not a diagnosis
A successful jump-start only confirms that additional electrical energy helped start the vehicle. It does not prove which component caused the discharge.
Repeated battery replacement can hide the cause
If a new battery also goes flat, the charging system and possible parasitic draw need investigation.
RMS testing
Battery health, alternator output and relevant electrical circuits can be tested before deciding what needs repair or replacement.
