Pre-Trip Vehicle Inspections

A pre-trip inspection is a practical readiness check before long-distance or holiday travel, especially when a vehicle is high-mileage, close to a service interval or has developed a new noise, warning light or vibration. RMS Bosch checks key safety and reliability areas, then prioritises anything that should be addressed before departure.

Before Long-Distance Travel

Plan Vehicle Readiness Early

A useful pre-trip check focuses on the areas most likely to affect a journey: tyre condition, brakes, fluid levels, cooling-system condition, battery and starting behaviour, lights, visible leaks and obvious suspension or steering concerns.

Service status also matters. If the vehicle is already due or nearly due for scheduled maintenance, completing the service before the trip may be more appropriate than relying on an inspection alone.

Book early enough to allow time for any recommended repair or service work before departure. For older or high-mileage vehicles, that margin is particularly useful because an inspection may uncover maintenance that cannot sensibly be completed at the last minute.

Our Pre-Trip Inspection Process

Review the journey and vehicle

Consider trip distance, expected driving conditions, service status, mileage and any recent warning lights, noises, vibrations or fluid loss.

Check high-risk items

Inspect tyres, brakes, fluids, cooling-system condition, battery, lights and visible suspension, steering or leak-related concerns that could affect the journey.

Prioritise the findings

Separate issues that should be addressed before travel from routine maintenance that can reasonably be planned after the trip, and explain the difference clearly.

Prepare the vehicle for the trip

Complete any approved priority work and provide a clearer view of the vehicle’s readiness before the planned journey.

Pre-Trip Inspection FAQs

What does a pre-trip vehicle inspection include?

It focuses on practical safety and reliability items such as tyres, brakes, fluids, battery condition, lights, visible leaks and suspension concerns.

How soon before a trip should I book an inspection?

Allow enough time for any recommended repairs or servicing to be completed before departure.

Is a pre-trip inspection the same as a car service?

No. A car service follows scheduled maintenance requirements, while a pre-trip inspection focuses on immediate vehicle readiness for a journey.

Is a pre-trip check worthwhile for an older vehicle?

It can be especially useful for high-mileage or older vehicles before prolonged highway or long-distance use.
