Car servicing
Should I service my car by mileage or date?
Follow the manufacturer’s time or mileage limit, whichever comes first. Severe driving conditions may require closer attention.
How do I know whether my next service is minor or major?
Check your vehicle’s maintenance schedule, mileage and previous service history. The items due vary by vehicle.
How much does a car service cost in South Africa?
Costs depend on your vehicle, oil specification and service items due. Request a vehicle-specific quotation.
Can I service my car outside a dealership without losing my warranty?
Manufacturer warranties and OEM service plans are different. Consumer protections, warranty terms and maintenance requirements matter; OEM service plans generally do not pay independent workshops. Confirm your specific terms before booking.
What is included in a minor car service?
Routine maintenance commonly includes oil, applicable filters and scheduled checks. The exact scope follows your vehicle’s maintenance schedule.
What is included in a major car service?
A major service covers the more extensive scheduled maintenance due for your make, model and mileage. Not all vehicles need the same items.
Can I book a service if my car has a warning light?
Yes. Mention the warning light when enquiring. Routine servicing does not automatically include fault diagnosis.
What details should I provide for a service quotation?
Provide the make, model, year, mileage, service history and any symptoms to help the workshop determine the appropriate scope.
Diagnostics and electrical
Why is my engine warning light on?
It can indicate faults involving ignition, emissions, sensors, fuel delivery or other systems. Diagnostic testing is needed to narrow down the cause.
Will a diagnostic scan tell me exactly which part to replace?
Not necessarily. A code points to a system or condition; targeted tests may be needed before a component is replaced.
How much does a diagnostic test cost?
The fee depends on the vehicle and testing needed. Ask for the assessment charge and approve further testing before it begins.
Why is my car losing power when accelerating?
Fuel, ignition, air intake, turbocharger or electronic-control problems may be involved. The symptoms should be assessed before repairs are recommended.
My car clicks once when I turn the key. Is it the starter?
Not always. A weak battery, poor connection or starting-circuit fault can cause clicking. Test the system first.
Why does my car battery keep going flat?
A weak battery, charging fault, electrical drain or frequent short journeys can be responsible. Testing helps identify the cause.
What if the battery warning light comes on while driving?
A charging fault may cause the engine to stall or fail to restart. Turn off unnecessary electrical loads, stop safely as soon as practical and arrange an assessment.
Can a diagnostic scan identify every car problem?
No. Some faults need mechanical inspection, wiring checks, road testing or measurements beyond a computer scan.
Brakes, suspension and repairs
Is it safe to drive with grinding brakes?
Grinding may indicate serious brake wear or damage. Avoid unnecessary driving; if braking performance is affected, arrange vehicle recovery.
Do brake pads and discs always need replacing together?
No. Disc measurements, wear and manufacturer limits determine whether discs need replacement.
Can a suspension noise be dangerous even if the car drives normally?
Yes. Worn joints, bushes or mounts can affect control. Have persistent or worsening noises inspected.
Should I book wheel alignment or a suspension inspection if my car pulls?
Start with an inspection when the cause is unclear. Tyres, brakes, steering and suspension can all contribute to pulling.
Why is my car overheating?
Possible causes include coolant leaks, thermostat, fan or circulation faults. Stop safely, switch off the engine and never open a hot pressurised coolant cap.
Will an air-con regas fix a system that is not cooling?
Only if the refrigerant charge is the issue. Leaks, compressor or electrical faults may require diagnosis first.
Does my car need wheel alignment after a pothole?
A pothole can damage tyres, wheels or suspension. If the car pulls or vibrates, arrange an inspection before alignment.
Which warning signs should I address before they become costly repairs?
Do not ignore leaks, overheating, warning lights, grinding noises, vibration or loss of power. Prompt assessment may reduce further damage.
